OUR Mission:

CAROL For Heart (CFH) is a 501C-3 non-profit organization founded in 2003 whose mission is to educate women, current and future medical professionals and lay people regarding the seriousness of the #1 killer of women-cardiovascular disease. CFH’s goals are: to educate women, professionals and lay people on the risk factor (high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol, diabetes, obesity & genetics) and prevention factors (fitness, nutrition, early identification and treatment). The women in this organization’s programs will learn how good health care, early detection and treatment, fitness and proper nutrition can contribute to a healthy heart.

Who are we?

CFH was started by the family of an amazing woman, Carol Pawelski. She was a daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, career woman and all around caring gal. On January 29, 2002, Carol experienced nausea and cold sweats and was taken to the emergency room by her husband. She died on Tuesday evening, February 5, 2002, exactly 7 days after entering the Emergency Room. Her family learned that Carol’s heart was badly damaged from at least 30 years of undiagnosed heart disease. Her heart was so badly damaged that she had already been in heart failure when her symptoms began. Carol’s disease was so severe that her daughters were immediately sent to the cardiologist for preventative treatment.

While in the hospital, Carol learned about the severity of her heart problem. She vowed that upon her recovery, she would teach other women to learn how to take care of their hearts. She wished she would have known earlier.  Carol’s father died of heart disease, her mother died of breast cancer. Knowing her increased risk for breast cancer, Carol was active in her breast cancer prevention. We were accustomed to thinking that heart disease was a man’s disease.  On behalf of Carol, her family made the commitment to make a difference in the lives of women and their heart health.

Carol’s life philosophy was one of family. Once you met her, she immediately considered you to be part of her family. She considered her community an extension of her own family. CFH was started by her family and has expanded to include board members from the local community. We strive to reach into our community and beyond to inform as many women as possible. Knowledge is power and when women are empowered with the correct information they can be proactive in their own heart health.

What does CAROL For Heart do?

CAROL For Heart works to educate women about heart disease in the Philadelphia area, surrounding suburban communities as well as New Jersey and Delaware. In our efforts to educate as many women as possible, we offer many diverse activities.

Free heart educational programs: Our heart programs are great for work seminars, brown bag seminars, women’s clubs, church groups, school groups, senior centers, circle of friends groups and more!  We come to your location and provide educational material for each participant from the American Heart Association and National Heart Lung and Blood Institute, a division of the National Institutes of Health. Our educational program can vary from 30 minutes to a 2 hour in-service depending on your allotted time. We send everyone home empowered to live a healthier life the moment they step out the door.

In 2003, CFH raised funds to support the women’s heart care program at Temple University Hospital. In mid 2005, CFH began offering programs to groups of women. Since that time CFH has spoken to over 5000 women about the prevention of heart disease.

In December 2005 a Continuing Medical Education (CME) program was held in conjunction with Temple University Hospital: Carol Pawelski Memorial Lecture (CME) -Issues in Cardiovascular Disease Management for Women: Emerging Concepts in the Care of Women with the Metabolic Syndrome. The program was attended by more than 80 physicians and was very well received. CFH continues to do several programs a month reaching all different types of women.
